Man Month Part 2 – Show-VAN-Isim
6 13 10 HT AM
Genesis 2:20-25 NKJV
Chauvinism: An attitude of superiority toward members of the opposite sex; also: behavior expressive of such an attitude
- Creation (how God set things up)
Genesis 2:21
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
Genesis 2:22
Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
Genesis 2:23
And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”
Genesis 2:24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Genesis 2:25
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
- 2. Choices (mankind making decisions)
Genesis 3:6
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.
Genesis 3:7
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.
Genesis 3:8
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. NKJV
- 3. Consequences (the result of the fall)
Genesis 3:14
So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
Genesis 3:16
To the woman He said:
“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.”
Genesis 3:17
Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
Genesis 3:18
Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
Genesis 3:19
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”
Genesis 3:20
And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
Genesis 3:21
Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
Genesis 3:22
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—
Genesis 3:23
therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.
Genesis 3:24
So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life. NKJV
Gender separation is a result of sin – contrast Genesis 2:23 and 3:20 – notice the post sin shift from “bone of my bone” to “Eve, mother of all living”
As you read these verses you have to be in the mindset of the guilty being sentenced, neither the serpent, the woman or the man are given anything that is to be celebrated or coveted. All three receive judgment; the serpent cursed the man and women the struggle is introduced, they will both struggle naturally and relationally.
Genesis 3:16 is a verse that is taken too often taken out of context. Nothing about this passage was intended to give either side rule. The natural mind sees this verses as one of rulership.
Two Simple rules of Biblical interpretation –
- 1. A verse out of context becomes a pretext
- 2. Interpret the Bible with the Bible.
Example;
Galatians 3:27
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:29
And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. NKJV
God has always intended that gender create a distinction, NOT a division.
You may be asking, why gender roles matter?
1 Peter 3:7
Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. NKJV
Lets go to the highest level possible and discover our proper view of gender roles.
Proper view of male female roles – Ruler vs. Redeemer?
Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
Ephesians 5:26
that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
Ephesians 5:27
that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:28
So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
Ephesians 5:29
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
Ephesians 5:30
For we are members of His body, ◙ of His flesh and of His bones.
Ephesians 5:31
“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” ◙
Ephesians 5:32
This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Ephesians 5:33
Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
When interpreting the Bible, when in doubt, choose the highest road possible in order to ensure that “self” does not get in the way of Christ working through your life. Self will always bring you down whereas Christ will always elevate you.
Christ characteristics of behavior toward Women (highest road possible)
- 1. Love her through actions
1 Corinthians 13:4
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud
1 Corinthians 13:5
or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. NLT
- 2. Sacrifice for her (greater love hath no man Jn 15:13)
John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. NKJV
- 3. Listen to her
Proverbs 18:12
Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty,
And before honor is humility.
Proverbs 18:13
He who answers a matter before he hears it,
It is folly and shame to him. NKJV
- 4. Care for her
Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
Ephesians 5:26
that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, NKJV
(Difference in a boy and a man is the ability to care for another Eph 5:25, 26)
- 5. Love as self
Ephesians 5:28
So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
Ephesians 5:29
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
