Paths Series Part III – Submission – How we choose the right path
5 31 09 HT PM
Over the past few weeks we have talked about:
· Why we end up in the wrong places – SEDUCED
· Why we listen to the wrong people –SWINDLED
Our series is Principle based – principles are not negotiable – our standing principle is:
· DIRECTION NOT INTENTION DETERMINES DESTINATION.
· Not about AGREEMENT, but ALINGMENT!
Today I want to answer the question how do we choose the right path? Is there a way in our life that if we desire to choose the right path, is that possible? Yes it is!
Proverbs 7:1 NLT
Follow my advice, my son;
always treasure my commands.
Proverbs 7:2
Obey my commands and live!
Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes.
Proverbs 7:3
Tie them on your fingers as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.
Proverbs 7:4
Love wisdom like a sister;
make insight a beloved member of your family.
Proverbs 7:5
Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman,
from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman.
Proverbs 7:6
While I was at the window of my house,
looking through the curtain,
Proverbs 7:7
I saw some naive young men,
and one in particular who lacked common sense.
Skip down
Proverbs 7:24 NLT
So listen to me, my sons,
and pay attention to my words.
Proverbs 7:25
Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her.
Don’t wander down her wayward path.
Proverbs 7:26
For she has been the ruin of many;
many men have been her victims.
Proverbs 7:27
Her house is the road to the grave.
Her bedroom is the den of death.
We discover the right path in life through living a SUBMITTED life – the WORD SUBMISSION is our key word to finding the right path.
How often have we ignored the instructions or directions in life only to find ourselves on the wrong path? You can choose the right path in life.
OUR GOALS – (2 goals)
1. To live like Christ-
· Christ – demonstrates submission
Philippians 2:5-8 MSG Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.
· The Cross-symbolizes it!
The cross is the intersection of our will vs. his will.
Luke 22:41 NKJV And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,
Luke 22:42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
2. Seek an understanding Heart
1 Kings 3:7 NKJV Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.
1 Kings 3:8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted.
1 Kings 3:9 Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
Our Great QUEST (2 quest)
1. Quest for Happiness -
Many people have made the wrong decision trying to be happy –
Happiness prefers:
· Immediate over the long term
· Gratification over fulfillment
· Self over others
This self-directed pursuit of “Happiness” has left to many lying by the road of life; this pursuit has contributed to everything from addictions to adultery from lies to losing everything. Yet the very heart of God is for you to enjoy life, in His joy we find strength, in his plan we find life…. Happiness is found not in self-pursuits, rather the pursuit of God.
Our quest in life should not be for Happiness but rather a quest to posses and protect our heart!
2. Quest for the Heart -
Proverbs 4:23-27 MSG Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.
How do you succeed in your quest for your heart?
1. Trust your heart to God –
Proverbs 3:5 NLT
Trust in the LORD with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:6
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
2. Tackle your thoughts
Philippians 4:8 NLT
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:9
Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
Colossians 1:21 NKJV And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled
Galatians 5:7 NKJV
You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?
Galatians 5:8
This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.
· Many of your thoughts will come from the one who wants to trip you up rather than the One who wants to lift you up.
· You will model your thinking!
Proverbs 23:6 NKJV Do not eat the bread of a miser,Nor desire his delicacies;
Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.“Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.
3. Tame your heart (do not follow it!)
Proverbs 7:25 NLT Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her. Don’t wander down her wayward path.
Proverbs 7:26 For she has been the ruin of many;
many men have been her victims.
Proverbs 7:27 Her house is the road to the grave.
You do not have to answer every call.
You do not have to satisfy every urge
You do not have to experience every thrill
You do have to tame your heart instead of letting your heart take you!
4. Turn your heart (toward the path of life)
Psalms 1:1-6 BBE
1 Happy is the man who does not go in the company of sinners, or take his place in the way of evil-doers, or in the seat of those who do not give honour to the Lord.2 But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and whose mind is on his law day and night. 3 He will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which gives its fruit at the right time, whose leaves will ever be green; and he will do well in all his undertakings. 4 The evil-doers are not so; but are like the dust from the grain, which the wind takes away. 5 For this cause there will be no mercy for sinners when they are judged, and the evil-doers will have no place among the upright, 6 Because the Lord sees the way of the upright, but the end of the sinner is destruction.
This morning if you would like to win the quest for your heart! I want to pray for you!
John 10:10 NKJV The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
