It All Depends on YOU!

Posted on 28 January 2009 by Marty Sloan (8)

I read Craig Groeschel’s blog this morning titled “should I stay or should I go” – http://swerve.lifechurch.tv/ –  it prompted me  to think about my own situation and position on a ministry team.  My thoughts on his article are first and foremost in total agreement.  Not just ministry places but really every place, whether you work in a church, museum or a hospital its very important that you like what you do and those you work with.  Let me give you some keys to NOT being miserable on the job!

  1. YOU must focus on what is right not what is wrong
  2. YOU must be responsible for your actions
  3. YOU must set the tone of positive dialogue about the organization and those in it
  4. YOU must have healthy boundaries as it relates to working relationships ( do not become a co-workers counselor)
  5. YOU must not cross the relational lines ( BTW, this helps avoid adultery if married and fornication if single)
  6. YOU must right any wrongs you create
  7. YOU must address if you feel someone has something against ( fault or no fault)
  8. YOU must must be comfortable to report to higher ups if needed about issues
  9. YOU must keep your attitude right
  10. YOU must seek ways to make things better
  11. YOU must not overreact! PATIENCE
  12. YOU must not become defensive
  13. YOU must not be attacking toward others
  14. YOU must shower, brush your teeth, iron your clothes, wear deodorant, comb ( please wash first) your hair, dress organizationally appropriate  ( breaking dress code rules is for high school)  - I know all this seems obvious in item 14 .. Unfortunately it is NOT!
  15. YOU must not allow offensive language, coarse dialogue or inappropriate dialogue to start.

Notice that all the above begin with “YOU” – instead of being miserable in your environment, start today creating a better one! YOU CAN DO IT! In closing, I must say that I love where I work, who I work with and what we achieve as a team, I love our heritage and the forward vision!  I thank God for my leader (Pastor Holden) and all those placed around me.

So we are always working for the lord not men.
Colossians 3:23 Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men.

I would like to agree with Craig Groeschel’s blog , but I have other thoughts. Should we be doing Jesus’s work, did he have patience, he was serious about his job. Wonder how he felt about the religious leaders in his day. The Scribes and Pharisees.
“In the modern sense they [the Scribes] were the religious scholars or theologians … sometimes called lawyers … or teachers of the law …could make judicial decisions based on Scriptural exegesis, occupied important positions in the Sanhedrin … played a major role in bringing on the crucifixion of Jesus” and they “mainly belonged to the party of the Pharisees” (WYCLIFFE Bible Dictionary, p. 1536).

Jesus called the Scribes and Pharisees “fools, hypocrites, blind guides, whited sepulchers, murderers, a generation of snakes,” . Jesus called them “hypocrites” seven times in one chapter (Matthew 23). He had coarse dialogue for the Scribes and Pharisees throughout His ministry; very few of them received a kind word from Him.

After the religious leaders killed Jesus because of the truth, they also went after Stephen, Peter, John and Paul because of the truth. If we know the “truth” and preach it (which we should all do out of love) I believe we will have our tribulations.

John 15:16Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. 17These things I command you, that ye love one another. 18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. 22If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. 23He that hateth me hateth my Father also. 24If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

    John 12:25
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
    John 15:18
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
    John 15:19
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
    John 17:14
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
    1 John 3:13
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

I love my job also, which means am I doing enough, am I truly doing the will of God.
Wow, truth comes with a price, it’s up to us in our journey. I dearly love the book of John almost as much as I love Jesus Christ the son of the living God.

I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Many thanks
